In the capital of Greece, Athens, taxi drivers began a two-day strike, the Associated Press reports. The second day of their strike will coincide with the general strike of the public and part of the private sector.
More than 200 taxis drove through the center of Athens as part of demonstrations on the first day of the strike. The protest was organized by their main union over a series of demands, including tax cuts, allowing bus-only “yellow lanes” and stricter regulations on the use of mobile apps that allow multiple passengers to share taxi rides.
“New taxes imposed on the self-employed have shaken up the taxi industry“, said Jorgos Voilis, taxi driver and union member.
A nationwide strike called by Greece’s public sector umbrella union has been announced for Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of the worst train accident in the country’s history. At that time, close to 60 people were killed, and more than a dozen were injured.
