Ten Hag criticizes United after Premier League stumble: ‘Lack of passion’

O Manchester United tied with Brentford 1-1, on Saturday (30), for the 30th round of the Premier League, out of home. The Red Devils managed to open the scoring with Mason Mount at 51 in the second half, but, in another stumble, conceded the draw at 54.

The result, which harms the club in its search for a place in the Champions League next season, generated criticism from coach Erik ten Hag. According to the coach, ‘there was a lack of passion’.

“We showed resilience throughout the game, but in terms of aggression Brentford were better. We should have shown more passion and desire in many moments of the game,” he said.

“We didn’t play well. We fought on the field, but not enough,” he added.

Manchester United have 48 points from 29 games. The team is in sixth place, eight points behind Tottenhamwho is fifth and is guaranteeing a place in Europa League. The distance to the Aston Villafourth place — a position that already leads to a place in the Champions League –, is 11 points.

“There are still many games left, but of course these points (of stumbles) could be costly in the end,” said Ten Hag.

“We should have won three, but it was only one. In the end we will know how it will be, but it could be a big point”, he concluded.

Defensive problem?

Brentford had 31 shots against United. In nine of the last 11 games, Ten Hag’s team conceded 20 or more shots, but he doesn’t believe that is a problem.

“As Brentford are very direct, we lost a lot of second balls and had to defend the area. We have a great goalkeeper (André Onana). He was brilliant,” said the coach.

“Our results have been consistent since January. We conceded shots, but we didn’t concede many goals”, he concluded.
