Tesla is selling fewer electric cars, cutting prices again and laying off around 10 percent of all employees. In Switzerland, however, things are going smoothly.

Tesla sold 8.5 percent fewer electric cars worldwide in the first three months of the year than in the same period last year – a bitter setback for the successful Musk Group. In Switzerland, however, Tesla is more popular than ever before. Sales increased 109 percent in the first quarter.

It is not the Model 3 that is responsible for its success, but the larger and more expensive Model Y. The electric SUV is breaking all our records – thanks in part to price reductions. From January to March, over 2,500 new Model Ys were redeemed. For comparison: The electric Skoda Enyaq in second place, also an SUV, had almost 800 sales in the same period. The almost 600 new registrations of the Model 3 also pale in comparison to the Model Y.

Even when looking at the entire car market, the Model Y outperforms all gasoline and hybrid models. Only the Skoda Octavia family station wagon, which has been popular for years, can still keep up.

Tesla Model Y and Skoda Octavia are the best-selling cars in Switzerland.

The Model Y has been the most popular car in this country for the last two years. It will be interesting to see whether Elon Musk’s loss of image will affect purchasing behavior in the future. Any declines due to Musk’s behavior will only appear with a delay, if at all.

Electric cars (excluding plug-in hybrids) achieved a market share of 18.2 percent (+1.7 percent) in Switzerland in the first three months of the year. Almost every third model is a Tesla. In the entire Swiss car market, Tesla now has a market share of 5.7 percent, compared to 2.7 percent in the first quarter of 2023.

Tesla under pressure worldwide

Tesla’s success in Switzerland cannot be inferred from other countries, Europe or even the world. Teslas are currently selling worse almost everywhere than last year. Tesla sales fell 9.5 percent year-over-year in Europe, 16 percent in North America and 3.8 percent fewer Teslas were redeemed in China. In Germany the brand even fell by 37 percent.

Tesla sales by region from early 2021 to early 2024

Global Tesla sales have been stagnating for six quarters.

Tesla boss Elon Musk responded to weak demand and growing competition with repeated price cuts. In many regions, however, the effect of price reductions now seems to have evaporated. The new Cybertruck has not yet met the high expectations either. In order to grow again worldwide, Tesla particularly lacks an affordable electric car. Musk has been promising this for years, but apparently recently changed his plans.

The focus is now on self-driving robotaxis, which Musk sees as the future. Instead, work on a cheap $25,000 Tesla was put on hold. According to Musk, the robotaxi will be unveiled in August. Whether and when it drives on the roads is another question.

In view of the subdued demand, Musk recently announced that he would cut around 10 percent of all jobs, which corresponds to around 14,000 jobs. Musk justified the move by saying that Tesla had grown too quickly.
