Vatican Synod of Bishops Opens Final Week with Theological and Spiritual Reflections

On Monday, October 23, the 16th Ordinary Session of the Synod of Bishops began its final week with participants sharing their theological and spiritual reflections. The session, held in Vatican City, aimed to foster a deeper understanding of God’s requirements for the church in a dynamic and practical way, much like the Second Vatican Council.

An Australian theologian, Rush, stressed the importance of adopting a practical and dynamic understanding of God’s requirements during the conference. He drew parallels between the ongoing synod and the Second Vatican Council, highlighting the need for active engagement with God’s teachings.

During his theological reflection at the conference, Dominican Father Timothy Radcliffe emphasized the importance of cooperation, describing it as an organic and ecological process rather than a competitive one. He likened it to planting a tree rather than trying to win a battle, emphasizing the need for collaboration among the participants.

Father Decliffe acknowledged that once the representatives return to their respective regions after the conference, there will be a waiting period of 11 months before reconvening in Rome. He compared this period to the fertile and embryonic stages of Sarah’s pregnancy in the Bible, where patience ultimately led to the fulfillment of God’s promise. He cautioned against the danger of succumbing to the pressures of divisive thinking and urged participants to nourish the growth of the church through their words and actions.

Benedictine Sister Ignazia Angelini offered a spiritual reflection on Jesus’ use of parables in the Gospels. She highlighted the significance of finding the connection between Jesus’ teachings and people’s experiences to prevent supernatural mysteries from becoming irrelevant. Sister Angelini emphasized that the parables reveal the style of Christ, with the parable of the wheat and the seed highlighting the importance of small beginnings and their potential to shape the future.

Australian theologian Don Ormond Rush compared the ongoing synod with the Second Vatican Council, emphasizing the responsibilities of the participants. He commended their dedication to truth and encouraged them not to shy away from challenging conventional ideas. Rush concluded that this synod, like the Second Vatican Council, serves as a dialogue with God, calling on participants to respond to the challenges presented with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The 16th Ordinary Session of the Synod of Bishops, taking place in Vatican City, has been a platform for profound theological and spiritual reflections. With a focus on practical and dynamic understanding of God’s requirements, the participants have engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at nurturing the growth of the church. As the synod enters its final week, its impact is expected to resonate beyond the conference hall, influencing the future direction of the Catholic Church.
