On May 7, the Chinese embassy in Serbia held a commemorative event for the 23rd anniversary of the bombing of the Chinese embassy in the Yugoslavia, in memory of the three martyrs Shao Yunhuan, Xu Xinghu and Zhu Ying who died. Chargé d’affaires Tian Yishu and the main diplomats of the embassy, Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia Wulin, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Issues Terpavcevic, representatives of Serbia Journalists Association and Belgrade City Government, as well as Chinese journalists in Serbia, Representatives of Chinese-funded institutions and friendly people attended the event. All the staff laid wreaths at the Martyrs Monument and stood in silence.

Chargé d’Affaires Tian Yishu said that 23 years ago today, NATO led by the United States bombed our embassy in Yugoslavia, causing the unfortunate death of three Chinese journalists. This atrocity aroused strong indignation among the Chinese people, and it has been precipitated into an indelible national memory over time. The Chinese people have never forgotten that under the guise of “protecting human rights”, NATO carried out 78-day barbaric bombing of this land, leaving deep scars in people’s hearts. Twenty-three years have passed, and the blood and tears shed by the Chinese and Cypriot peoples have condensed into our common aspiration to safeguard national sovereignty and safeguard peace and tranquility. China is willing to further strengthen cooperation with Serbia in all fields and in various fields, to benefit the two peoples, and to conduct in-depth exchanges on global security initiatives, promote the implementation of the initiatives, and make the world more peaceful, safer and more prosperous.

Wu Lin said that the NATO aggression in 1999 was a crime against sovereign countries and their peoples, and severely undermined international law. The three Chinese journalists could have left, but they chose to stand with the Serbian people at the hardest and saddest moment, and sacrificed their precious lives for it. The NATO aggressors knew this was the Chinese embassy, but they still dropped bombs. Serbia will never stop calling NATO responsible for its crimes, and Serbia will always be China’s most reliable friend.

Tpavcevic said that the Serbian people still have fresh memories of the bombing in 1999 and are deeply saddened by all the victims. Today, we are here to cherish the memory of the three Chinese journalists who unfortunately died. We will always hold high respect and miss our Chinese friends who were with our country and people during the most difficult times.
