The socialist mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo has officially announced her candidacy for the French presidential elections of 2022: “To offer a future to our children” and “to build a more just France,” she said in Rouen. “We must reinvent our French model weakened by so many crises – said the mayor – and restore respect and unity in the country”.
The announcement is not a surprise: it comes after several months of travel, to have “the foundations to be able to speak to the country”. It is in the city of the young socialist mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, a relative, that Anne Hidalgo has chosen to speak: an ideal place to illustrate the industrial reconversion through the ecological transition, which will be one of the central themes of her campaign.
Hidalgo is currently credited with between 7 and 9% of the votes according to polls.
Michel Barnier, the man of Brexit, is also running for the French presidential elections
