The Peninsula Hong Kong opens “Art in Resonance” project exhibition – MONDO MODA

The Peninsula hotel group has just resumed its “Art in Resonance“. For the relaunch, a collection of commissioned works is being displayed at the chain’s iconic flagship hotel in Hong Kong. Originally launched in 2019, “Art in Resonance” offers guests and visitors immersive experiences, with the aim of supporting each destination’s cultural ecosystem by providing emerging artists with the funding, curatorial support and logistics that allow them to create new works to be displayed to the public.
The Peninsula Hong Kong’s exhibition includes a sculpture by local artist Kingsley Ng, which hangs above the hotel’s iconic facade.

Ng describes the installation as “an undulation between the physics of gravity and the buoyancy of air.” According to the artist, the piece – named “Esmeralda”, inspired by one of the fictional locations in the book “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino – aims to establish a dialogue with Hong Kong.
Also welcoming guests and visitors is Lachlan Turczan’s newly commissioned kinetic sculpture “Harmonic Resonance”, which provides a fascinating exploration of visible sound. The work features a parabolic mirror measuring more than 1.6m in diameter, which will shape a shallow pool of water with a series of choreographed infrasonic tones, which invite public participation. The low-frequency tones cause oscillating patterns on the pool surface, some of which appear to move in stop-motion.

The glittering sculptural work “SOLI”, by French artist Elise Morin, originally commissioned in 2019, was also expanded by the artist especially for this exhibition in Hong Kong. The work was expanded with more than four thousand shredded CDs. Morin’s piece, which resembles a whale breaching the ocean’s surface, is a commentary on the material burden of objects.

Another inspiring work included in the exhibition is Saya Woolfalk’s “Visionary Reality Portal”, a digital portal for contemplating other worlds. The colorful, kaleidoscopic and multi-sensory video installation will be housed in a room specially built for the work. The play, which originally premiered at The Peninsula Paris in 2019, was adapted by the renowned Japanese-American artist to connect with audiences in Hong Kong.

The Peninsula has been committed to promoting the culture of the cities in which its properties are based for years, inviting guests to interact with art through a variety of platforms. The group has hosted artist residencies, mounted exhibitions, hosted lectures and symposiums, and offered studio visits and workshops with local creators whose work exemplifies the creative energy of their hometowns.

The works in the exhibition will remain at The Peninsula Hong Kong until May; they will then travel regularly to other group properties around the world, joining additional newly commissioned installations from local artists. During the exhibition, The Peninsula Hong Kong will offer visitors free access to all pieces, as well as guided tours, special dining experiences and other activations to highlight and pay tribute to the artists.
