The reason why Pertamina fuel prices do not increase even though world oil is expensive

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is outspoken about the reasons for not increasing fuel prices (BBM) which they sell as of May 1, 2024.

Pertamina Patra Niaga Corporate Secretary Irto Ginting said this decision had to be taken, even though world oil prices were creeping up. On the other hand, the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar also continues to weaken.

“The adjustment of non-subsidized fuel prices does refer to regulations. However, in the current conditions we support the government’s efforts to maintain economic stability,” said Irto in an official statement, Wednesday (1/5).

He emphasized that the decision not to increase Pertamina’s fuel prices refers to several aspects, including the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 245.K/MG.01/MEM.M/2022 concerning price formulation for general fuel types (JBU) or non-subsidized fuel.

In this regulation, the fuel price formulation is influenced by a number of aspects, starting from the exchange rate to Means Oils of Platts Singapore (MOPS).

On the other hand, a number of private gas stations are busy raising their fuel prices. Starting from Shell to BP AKR.

For example, the highest price increase at Shell reached IDR 1,000 per liter for Shell Super, aka RON 92 products, from IDR 14,530 to IDR 15,530 per liter. Then, Shell V-power Nitro+ (RON 98) increased to IDR 16,570 per liter from IDR 15,570.

Meanwhile, BP AKR increased to IDR 990 per liter for the BP Ultimate fuel type, from IDR 15,360 per liter to IDR 16,350 per liter. Followed by BP 92 which increased by IDR 600 from IDR 14,300 per liter to IDR 14,900 per liter.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Nicke Widyawati briefly touched on the reasons for not increasing fuel prices. In fact, Nicke emphasized that Pertamina has not increased fuel prices since early 2024.

He said that stock management and cross-subsidies carried out by Pertamina could still reduce the potential for fuel price increases.

“For example, our RON 92 (pertamax) is cheaper at our competitor’s price, the difference is Rp. 1,000-Rp. 2,000. As a BUMN we of course have to look at the condition of people’s purchasing power, not just look for profit,” stressed Nicke in the Public Hearing ( RDP) with Commission VI DPR RI in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Thursday (28/3).

The Indonesian government, through the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, also emphasized that there will be no increase in fuel prices until June 2024. This also applies to electricity rates.
