In March, it became known that Haaland, who plays for the Norwegian national team and Manchester City, will go under the title “the worlds best football player”, has entered into a cooperation agreement with the Norwegian Maritime Council. The agreement is set for 2.5 years and entered into force on 1 April.

State company
The Seafood Council is a state limited liability company, wholly owned by the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries. The council is financed through an export tax from the seafood industry, and their total income was NOK 579 million in 2022. In comparison, the super striker earns almost half a billion kroner a year from football, according to the financial magazine Forbes.

The Seafood Council has not wanted to disclose the sum to Haaland. The former seafood ambassador and retired cross-country ace Marit Bjørgen lifts the veil, however, and reveals that she received a total of NOK 4.3 million for her nine-year collaboration.

Haaland himself has not commented on the matter. Dagbladet has also contacted athlete Karsten Warholm, who has had a similar agreement with the Seafood Council. He will not comment on his fee. The Seafood Council has confirmed that Bjørgen received NOK 4.3 million for his efforts.

Competitive considerations

Norway’s Seafood Council promotes Norwegian seafood abroad. They will also contribute to increased knowledge about and consumption of seafood in Norway through information work. The company is an advisory body for the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries in matters of export and turnover and production linked to the export of seafood.
