Sports Day Nyara Sabally reaches for Europe’s basketball crown

April 12, 2024, 9:46 a.m

Last year, Satou Sabally won the EuroLeague title, and now her younger sister Nyara also has the crown in European club basketball. The 24-year-old from Berlin will be taking part in the Final Four in Mersin/Turkey with ZVVZ USK Prague from the Czech Republic at the weekend, only two wins short of a great triumph.

The German national player Sabally joined the club from Prague after her first WNBA season with New York Liberty and directly reached the final tournament of the premier class. This Friday (3 p.m. CEST) she will face Villeneuve-d’Ascq LM from France. If the Czechs prevail in the semi-finals, a Turkish opponent awaits in the final on Sunday (6 p.m.): Fenerbahçe Istanbul or hosts Cukurova Basketbol Mersin.

The two Sabally sisters and the national team had secured the first ever Olympic ticket for a German women’s basketball team in the spring; another key player on the way to Paris was Leonie Fiebich. And the 24-year-old from Spanish club Casademont Zaragoza is looking forward to Mersin on Saturday. There, on the sidelines of the tournament, it will be announced who has been voted the most valuable player (MVP) of the EuroLeague season. Fiebich is one of three candidates; the Australian Ezi Magbegor (Prague) and Emma Meesseman from Belgium (Fenerbahçe) also made it to the final selection.
