The trizone and the shared leadership of Frosinone Calcio in Filippo Polletti’s book

The secret of winning leadership, even in goals? And in the 3 Cs: collaboration with people and technology, heart and brain. The new challenges, the new perspectives of artificial intelligence in the book “Smart Leadership Canvas” by the most followed journalist on LinkedIn Filippo Poletti. A footballing and organizational path modeled by president Maurizio Stirpe who proposed other cornerstones: challenges, sustainability and attention to the territory. The third chapter of Poletti’s book, published by Guerini Next, deals with the “Frosinone case”, which landed in Serie A three times under the presidency of Maurizio Stirpe (vice president of Confindustria with responsibility for labor and industrial relations). The third chapter of the volume, in fact, is entitled “goal leadership” in homage to Frosinone and features the interview with president Stirpe alongside those of 19 other great executive managers involved in the rest of the book. The book was presented in the press room of the Stirpe stadium last Monday after Frosinone’s victory over Cagliari 3-1.

INSIGHTS

THE 3 C

«The leadership of the three Cs, respectively collaboration, heart and brain – explained Poletti, the most followed journalist on LinkedIn in Italy, the social media dedicated to work – is the secret of success. It’s sort of “trizone”which starts from the synergy created within the same team. The leadership today is collaborative or collectivistic, because the key factor for achieving positive goals is, precisely, “we”. Frosinone is a virtuous example of “shared leadership”: there is a president-entrepreneur, a law graduate like Maurizio Stirpe, a former player and sports manager like Guido Angelozzithe coach Eusebio Di Francescoa second coach, the technical trainers, the collaborators, the match analyst Stefano Romanothose who deal with injury recovery, the players on the pitch and the rest of the club, which has been active in the competitive field since 1923.”

Poletti added at the Stirpe stadium: «The leader must develop collaboration with technologywhich in the coming years will increasingly rely on the extensive use of artificial intelligence.

Let’s think, for example, of today’s contribution of intelligent or “smart” bibs and shin guards, which send relevant data to sports clubs and the Football League, thanks to which it is possible to carry out quantitative and qualitative analyzes to establish, on the part of coaches, the workloads of the players in training, identify the goal expectations, the strengths with dead balls or even the crossing situations. The task of a leader such as the coach of a football team is to translate data into game intuitions. Di Francesco knows this well, having gained great experience in the analysis of the same data years ago at Sassuolo at the Mapei data analysis center and from 1 July 2023 at the sports citadel of Ferentino del Frosinone”.

Collaboration between people and with new technologies, however, is not enough to win one or more games: «It is also necessary – Poletti clarified – the heart, that is, attention first and foremost to the players, collaborators and fans. The true leader must be an excellent psychologist and, at the same time, the boss.”

And the third “segment”. «A football club must demonstrate that it has brain, using it to achieve the set objectives, from winning matches to achieving economic-financial sustainability and developing the attractiveness of the territory. The leadership practiced by Frosinone can teach the world of non-football businesses at least three things: real-time adaptation of the game plan, continuous innovation, because it is not true that “you don’t change a winning team”, but you always have to look to tomorrow, and, finally, the periodic measurement or comparison with those who support the company, because every week in football we must be accountable to thousands of fans who follow, as in the case of Frosinone, their favorite team at home and away with great affection.”
