The Unitary Platform warned about the escalation of persecution against democratic forces in Venezuela

The main opposition alliance in Venezuela, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), has warned of the intentions of the Nicolás Maduro regime to continue persecuting democratic forces in the country. This comes after Maduro described the Vente Venezuela party, led by former deputy María Corina Machado, as a “terrorist” organization.

The PUD condemned this labeling by the regime, stating that it violates the human rights of Venezuelans and worsens the authoritarianism that characterizes Maduro’s government. The coalition expressed concern over the potential persecution of VV members and other democratic forces, including Machado herself, whom Maduro singled out during a recent television appearance.

The national coordinator of Vente Venezuela, Henry Alviárez, emphasized that the accusations against the party are baseless and rejected any association with terrorist activities. Despite these challenges, the opposition alliance is committed to bringing about change through electoral and democratic means in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, the PUD reported obstacles in nominating their candidate for the presidential elections on July 28, leading to the registration of Edmundo González Urrutia as the opposition candidate. The party has faced criticism from the international community for alleged hindrances to their nomination process.

Maduro’s crackdown on Vente Venezuela supporters, citing alleged links to a supposed plot to assassinate him, has raised concerns among opposition groups. The regime has targeted collaborators and members of the party, fueling tensions in the already polarized political landscape of Venezuela.

Overall, the situation highlights the ongoing challenges facing democratic forces in Venezuela and the need for continued international scrutiny and support in ensuring free and fair elections in the country.
