The number 7 jersey that Ronaldo usually wears was worn by Bruma in this match. He made history as the only player to wear the iconic number since 2007 apart from Ronaldo.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo was absent from Portugal’s 5-2 win over Sweden in a friendly match at the Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques in Guimaraes, according to reports Goal.
Bruma started the match on the bench but was introduced in the second half by manager Roberto Martinez. He took advantage of the rare opportunity by scoring Portugal’s fourth goal after a beautiful assist from Bruno Fernandes.
“I first met him as a youngster and several times since then, most recently as part of the national team,” Bruma said after the match.
“We always have a good chat. He’s my biggest idol, but it feels more like friendship. He’s the best footballer in the world. He’s a great person, an example for everyone, especially young players,” he continued.
After this, Bruma will return to wearing the number 17 jersey as usual, because Ronaldo is expected to return to play against Slovenia on Wednesday next week.
