[NTD News September 07, 2021, Beijing time]Italian aerobatic pilot Costa recently set a record by flying through a road tunnel in Turkey at an ultra-low altitude.
Costa, a 41-year-old aerobatic pilot, performed an unprecedented challenge in the “Chatalka Tunnel” near Istanbul, Turkey. He flew the Zivko Edge 540 aerobatic aircraft and passed through two tunnels in a row.
Costa took off in the first tunnel. Because of the limited height of the tunnel, he had to fly no more than 1 meter above the ground. In addition, the tunnel space is narrow and limited by curvature and slope. If the pilot does not have super reaction and control, crossing the tunnel is simply an “impossible task.” No wonder no one has ever undertaken this challenge in the past.
After passing through the first 360-meter-long tunnel, Costa quickly flew into the second 1,160-meter-long tunnel after finishing the warm-up. Here, he flies at a speed of 245 kilometers per hour. In the end, he completed the entire challenge in 43.44 seconds.
After rushing out of the tunnel, the excited Costa shouted excitedly, and pulled up the plane, soaring into the sky, a 360-degree turn in the air.
Stunt pilot Costa: “Very excited, very excited. We have been preparing for this project for more than a year, and then successfully completed it.”
Costa, who has more than 20 years of flying experience, said that he has always wanted to fly through the tunnel. This is the most difficult and complex challenge he has experienced so far. Now he is finally relieved and can enjoy the joy of success.
