NEW YORK. Panic in the street, in New York, due to the explosion of some electrical cables in Times Square, in the heart of the city. The attack was feared.
The explosion – according to local media – was caused by a fire in the underground pipeline. “An inspection pit exploded in the Times Square area due to overheating of some cables,” a spokesperson for the Con Edison utility said in a statement.
Firefighters found elevated levels of carbon monoxide in some nearby buildings, in the cellar at 229 West 43rd Street, which was renovated shortly thereafter.
There would be no injuries in the escape attempt.
