Tourist from Gresik dies swept away by waves at Paseban Beach in Jember, two others survive

Liputan6.com, Jember – Three tourists from Gresik Regency were swept away by the waves at Paseban Beach in Jember, causing one person to die while two people survived.

“The victim who died was Agung Setiawan (44), a resident of Segoromadu Village, Kebomas District, Gresik Regency on the second day of Eid,” said Head of the Jember BPBD Emergency and Logistics Division, Penta Satria, Friday (12/4/2024).

According to him, the victim and his wife, children and nephew initially visited Eid greetings at his relative’s house in Lumajang, but when they returned to Gresik Regency they still stopped at Paseban Beach in Kencong District, Jember Regency on Thursday (11/4) afternoon.

“Based on information from the family, the victim took his family to Paseban Beach because one of his sons had itching on his feet and hands, so he wanted to treat the child by bathing at Paseban Beach,” he said.

After arriving at Paseban Beach, he continued, the victim and his two children took a shower and not long after the waves hit the south coast of Jember until the three people were swept away by quite large waves.

“The Paseban SAR team carried out the rescue and the three victims who were dragged away were taken to the nearest health center, but one victim, Agung, was declared dead,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased victims were washed at the Kencong Community Health Center (PKM) and immediately taken to the funeral home in Gresik Regency.

Victims of a deadly ritual on the South Coast of Jember testified that they were hit twice by big waves, causing the participants to panic and be dragged out to sea. The pitch black conditions made it difficult to save fellow comrades.
