Nearly 100 people were injured, most of them mildly, in a collision between two trains in the south of the capital Tunis. “The collision between two trains resulted in 95 injured who were transported to the hospital”, said the spokesman for the Civil Protection. Moez Treaaadding that one of the trains was carrying passengers while the second was empty.

According to Treaa himself, no serious cases have been reported. 15 ambulances and other emergency vehicles immediately arrived at the scene of the accident. The collision between the two trains of the National Society of Tunisian Railways (Sncft) occurred around 9.30 (local time) in Jbel Jelloud, in the southern outskirts of the capital. The causes of the accident have not yet been disclosed.

The collision took place a few minutes before the expected arrival of two trains bound for Tunis central station. In December 2016, five people were killed and more than 50 were injured in the same area in a collision between a public transport bus and a train due to faulty infrastructure.

In June 2015, however, Tunisia experienced one of the most serious railway tragedies in its recent history, with the death of 18 people in an accident between a train and a truck in El Fahes, about sixty kilometers south of Tunis. The accident was caused by a signaling failure at the level crossing.
