U.S. Treasury to Sanction Seven Myanmar Government Officials and a Port Operator – WSJ

The U.S. Treasury Department will sanction seven Myanmar government officials and a port operator for their ties to the military regime that seized power in a coup last year and their involvement in the persecution of members of the former civilian government.

The sanctions announced Monday by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control in coordination with Britain and Canada coincided with the one-year anniversary of the February 2021 coup in Myanmar that overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government. Earlier this month, Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of three charges.

Also sanctioned are KT Services & Logistics Co., which has been operating the TMT port in Yangon, Myanmar, since 2016, as well as its chief executive, the U.S. Treasury Department said. The finance ministry said KT leased the port for $3 million a year from Myanma Economic Holdings Public Co., which is owned by Myanmar’s military or security forces.
