Two European leagues will receive an extra place in the 2024/25 tournament – and this season’s results will be key
The Champions League will be expanded next season, which means more teams and more games. In fact, there will be four additional clubs in the group stage as the number of participants rises from 32 to 36.
One of the additional places will go to the third-placed team in the championship who is fifth in the UEFA coefficient rankings (Ligue 1, in this case), which is based on the performance of clubs from each country in continental competitions over the last five seasons. The other will be played by a national champion, with the number of teams classified via preliminary stages through the ‘champions route’ increasing from four to five.
However, the new coefficient rankings will reward the two leagues with the best results in the 2023/24 UEFA club competitions.
