Isw, the Kremlin will do nothing against Prigozhin for now
The charges against the militia chief are unlikely Wagner to have indicated to the forces Ukrainians Russian troop positions to be bombed will prompt the Kremlin to remove Yevgeny Prigozhin in the near term, but may contribute to efforts to discredit him. The US think tank Isw (Institute for the study of war) writes this in its latest update on the situation in Ukraine.
“The Kremlin probably suspects or is aware of the communications of Prigozhin with Ukrainian intelligence and was probably not taken aback by the news published by the Washington Post or leaked US intelligence documents,” writes the ISW, “the Kremlin is probably preparing mechanisms to discredit Prigozhin as a traitor.
Anonymous sources of Kremlin they revealed that the Russian presidential administration is preparing an information operation to publicly discredit Prigozhin, but noted that the Kremlin is unlikely to threaten Prigozhin while the Wagner forces are at the forefront.
The think tank analysts point out that Prigozhin commands the Wagner forces in Donbass and his removal would disrupt the Russian lines at Bakhmut, a risk Putin is unlikely to run. Furthermore, the Kremlin is unable to publicly remove and replace Prigozhin as the de facto head of Wagner, because Wagner is an independent company and Prigozhin holds no official position in the Russian government.
Removing Prigozhin from his control over Wagner would involve demonstrating direct Kremlin control over the mercenary group from which Putin has tried to maintain a formal distance.
