The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky he asked the Israeli premier Naftali Bennett to mediate with Russia. The request, according to the public broadcaster May, was advanced during a phone call between the two leaders. According to Zelensky, Israel is the only Western country that has good relations with both of them and could be the best venue for negotiations.

According to Bennett’s office, Israel has allegedly offered humanitarian aid to Ukraine. “The prime minister reiterated his hope for a quick end to the fighting and said he stood by the Ukrainian people in these difficult days,” he said in a statement.

It is not the first time that Zelensky, who is Jewish, has made such a request, but it is the first time that he has done so since Russia started invading Ukraine. Israel is one of the few countries that maintains good enough ties with both Russia and Ukraine.

Israel condemned the Russian invasion as “a grave violation of international order” and has remained largely silent on Moscow’s actions ever since. Israel is in a delicate position, as it has large Jewish communities residing in both countries and whose safety is a priority for the Israeli authorities.
