Ukraine, Zelensky: now more realistic talks. Biden, one billion military aid to Kiev

“Russia must be stopped, and the Court has a role to play in stopping it,” Ukraine’s representative Anton Korynevych told the IGC. Russia defected from the hearings of 7 and 8 March, arguing in a written document that the court “has no jurisdiction” because Kiev’s request falls outside the scope of the 1948 Genocide Convention on which its case is based. “The government of the Russian Federation respectfully requests the court to refrain from indicating interim measures and to remove the case from its list,” Moscow said, claiming she did not show up because she did not have enough time to prepare. Moscow justified its use of force in Ukraine by claiming that it “is acting in self-defense”. Today’s hearing comes as the number of refugees fleeing Ukraine has reached three million and Russian forces intensify attacks on residential buildings in Kiev. At the same time, both Ukraine and Russia say progress is being made in talks to end the fighting.
