Ukrainian mathematician commits suicide in Russia after arrest

Young Ukrainian mathematician Konstantin Olmezov committed suicide in Russia after being arrested while trying to leave the country.
This was announced by the Ukrainian Mathematicians association on Twitter. Russian lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov reports on Telegram, quoted by Ukrinform: “I received a report saying that this morning (March 20, ed), he committed suicide, leaving a farewell note, where he wrote that he killed himself because couldn’t stand the horrors of what’s going on. A talented and promising mathematician. Kostiantyn Olmezov ». And again: «For him – he added – the lack of freedom was worse than death. Olmezov, who was born in 1995, has been detained for 15 days since February 26 after an initial attempt to escape from Russia. Then he was invited to continue his university studies in Austria and tried to leave again. He bought a plane ticket to Turkey – a tweet from Ukrainian Mathematicians reads – but the second escape was also unsuccessful. Then he took his own life.
According to the lawyer Zakhvatov, quoted by UNIAN, an administrative protocol “was fabricated against the scientist and because of this Olmezov was held under arrest for 15 days”.
On Twitter Ukrainian Mathematicians write that Konstantin was Ukrainian, he had studied at the National University of Donetsk which he left due to the war and then continued his mathematics studies at Mipt, in Russia. Konstantin – we read in another tweet – was in love with additive combinatorics. He was also a poet, his channel on Telegram is full of poems. “
