Last year an image of George Floyd, the 46-year-old African American killed by police in Minneapolis, was projected on a screen in Richmond, in the US state of Virginia, in front of the bronze statue of the general Robert E. Lee on horseback. The crowd had gathered on Monument Avenue and covered the pedestal with graffiti denouncing systemic racism and the inequalities carried out by law enforcement agencies in the United States.
