A miserable last hole meant that Viktor Hovland had a difficult start to the PGA tournament in Charlotte.

Friday 10 May at 01:09

The Norwegian suffered a double bogey (two over par) on the 18th hole, which meant that he ended up at +1 on the first day.

Xander Schauffele leads at −7.

Discovery commentator Henrik Bjørnstad said when there were three holes left that “now it is necessary to hold on to -2” for the rest of the round.

Hovland couldn’t do that:

  • The 16th hole ended with bogey and thus -1.
  • The 18th hole therefore ended with a double bogey and thus +1.

He ended up in the water on the left side of the green on the last hole on Thursday.

The tournament is the prestigious Wells Fargo Championship, and Hovland is tied for 43rd before Friday’s round.

He is back in tournament play for the first time after the failure of the Masters, where he failed to make the cut (that is, did not make the top half of the leaderboard after two rounds).

Behind the leader Schauffele, there is no one before at −4, with among others the Swede Alex Norén.
