Volcano in the Canaries, lava reaches the ocean: fears for gas clouds

by admin

The lava flow of the volcano on the island of Palma that is pouring into the ocean from a cliff has caused the formation of a pyramid of over 50 meters. This was reported by the Marine Geosciences group of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, on its Twitter account: «We observe live the advance of the lava at the foot of the coastal cliff coming from the southern flow of the La Palma volcano. An imposing deposit more than 50 meters high is being generated », was the message published last night.

The volcano’s lava reaches the sea: in La Palma risk of toxic clouds

The thermal shock caused by the contact of the lava ejected from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) with the waters of the sea is causing clouds of toxic gases, which however are dissipating rapidly, according to the first observations of experts on the ground . At the moment this phenomenon does not particularly worry the authorities as the inhabitants of the area where it is taking place have been evacuated for days or have been ordered to remain isolated at home with doors and windows closed, Spanish media say.

On its way to the sea, the lava covered part of a coastal interurban road vital to transport on the southwestern part of La Palma. According to the most recent data from the European Copernicus system, the volcano’s flows have already destroyed at least 589 buildings and covered 258 hectares of land.
