There is no peace for Alexei Navalny. The best known opponent of Vladimir Putinin prison for three years for political reasons, was again transferred to solitary confinement for a period of ten days, for the 25th time since August 2022. This was reported by his staff, quoted by the online newspaper Medusa. Thus, in less than a year and a half, the days spent by the politician and blogger in prison became 283. It’s the second time that Navalny has been sent to solitary confinement since he was transferred to the remote prison in December”Polar Wolf“, on the Yamal Peninsula, above the Arctic Circle. The first time – taking up the language of the officials of the penal colony – the dissident said he had been sent to a punishment cell because he was accused of not “present yourself according to the rules“. Now the reason seems similar: according to his collaborators, Navalny would have been accused of “presenting himself incorrectly”.

In his new prison, the politician revealed that he and the other inmates were subjected to particularly harsh treatment: very early in the morning they are obliged to listen to the Russian anthem and songs by Shaman, a popular pro-Putin nationalist singer. “Singer Shaman he became famous when I was already in prison, so I wouldn’t have been able to see him or listen to his music. But I knew that he had become Putin’s most important singer and that his most famous song is “I am Russian“. Obviously I was curious to listen to it, but where could I listen to it? Then they took me to Yamal. And here at 5 o’clock in the morning we hear the command “get up!”, followed by the Russian national anthem, after which the second most important song in the country is played: “I am Russian” by Shaman,” he said.
From the beginning of his detention, Navalny says he was continuously locked in solitary confinement the most absurd excuses, like having washed your face a little before the appointed time. A situation already denounced by Amnesty International, which accused the management of the Melekhovo prison – where the dissident was imprisoned until a few weeks ago – of wanting to “break the spirit of man, making his existence in the penal colony unbearable, humiliating and dehumanizing.” For almost the entire month of December, however, nothing was known about his fate: on 6 December his staff reported having lost contact with him, and only at the end of the month, the authorities announced that Navalny had been transferred to the remote special regime penal colony in the far north of Russia.
