The João Rock festival announced the complete lineup for the 2024 edition this week. CPM 22, Emicida + Pitty, Ney Matogrosso and Os Paralamas do Sucesso are among the attractions. In addition to the confirmed artists, Black Pantera’s absence surprised the band itself, which decided to snipe the organization.

On November 20th, considered National Black Awareness Day, the event published a message on social media video titled “Rock is Black”. The Minas Gerais musicians appear in part of the record, composed of images of different black singers and a narration about the importance of diversity in music.
At the time, several fans engaged in the comments section and asked for Black Pantera to be part of this year’s lineup. The request, however, was not fulfilled.
Given the situation, in which their name was exploited by the festival, the group was upset when they were not considered for the lineup. Therefore, they reposted the mentioned publication on their account on Instagram and poked at the event:
“We serve to be in the festival feed on 11/20 to generate engagement and such, but never to be on the line. We have few ideas! It’s not arrogance, it’s not stardom, it’s just zero patience.”
In the comments section, drummer Rodrigo Pancho added:
“You don’t want to call, you don’t call, f*ck it, but you also don’t come and get the band engaged on 11/20, do me a favor, right.”
Chaene da Gama, vocalist and bassist, also added:
“Many layers and examples of experiences and such. Black Consciousness is every day, it is daily construction. Too funny, no patience, no time.”
It is worth noting that Black Pantera, despite having participated in festivals such as Knotfest Brasil, Lollapalooza Brasil and Rock in Rio, never performed on the official João Rock stages. Last year, the band climbed the MCD space of the event in an action carried out with the clothing brand.
In fact, Rodrigo made a point of emphasizing that no invitation came from the festival:
“Last year we were there at the invitation of MCD, doing an action for the brand. The festival never invited us. We played on the MCD stage, because the festival itself doesn’t even give us morale.”
João Rock 2024
In addition to the artists already mentioned, João Rock’s 2024 lineup includes: Marcelo D2 (along with Djonga and Um Punchado de Bamba), Samuel Rosa, Marina Sena, Armandinho, Thiago Castanho, Marcão Britto, Detonautas, Lulu Santos, Djavan, 14 Bis and Novos Baianos, Duda Beat, Marina Lima, Maria Gadú, Negra Li and Tássia Reis, Ebony, Ryu The Runner, Wiu, Teto and Veigh.
The festival takes place on June 8th, at the Permanent Exhibition Park in Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo. The first batch of tickets are now on sale via official site.
About Black Panther
Founded in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Black Pantera features Charles Gama (voice and guitar), Chaene da Gama (voice and bass) and Rodrigo Augusto (drums) in the lineup. To date, 3 full studio albums have been released. The most recent, “Ascensão”, came out in 2022.
Soon after, the group performed at Rock in Rio, together with Devotos from Pernambuco. The show was part of the traditional “metal night”, which opened the most recent edition of the event.
In November, Black Pantera released the EP “Griô”, with 5 tracks. The work is the first in the band’s career with material exclusively in English.
