Bundesliga soccer team Werder Bremen failed to catch up to the top six places in the table. The Hanseatic League did not get beyond a 1:1 (1:1) draw against newly promoted Darmstadt 98 on Saturday. Video evidence also helped them twice.

by Johannes Freytag

The North Germans benefited from an own goal from Darmstadt’s Christoph Zimmermann, and Julian Justvan equalized for the guests. The draw was fair: Werder was the dominant team for long stretches of the game, but they didn’t exactly set off offensive fireworks – the promoted team from Hesse had little trouble defending against Werder’s attacks and in the end was unlucky twice to score goals according to video evidence (according to the rules ) were revoked.

“That was incredibly wild!”

Werder Bremen’s Christian Groß

Werder’s defender Christian Groß struggled with the way the game was going: “We failed to score the second goal after making it 1-0. We also had one or two good chances in the second half – and then things just get incredibly wild at the back.” Groß only partially went along with the dreams about Europe: “We are already ambitious because we haven’t lost many games. Nevertheless, I stick with the word ‘development’, we have to push it forward a little bit. If we can do that , we will also get some points.”

Werder takes the lead early…

Werder coach Ole Werner made two changes to his team compared to the 1-0 win in Cologne: Christian Groß replaced the injured captain Marco Friedl (syndesmosis tear), and Justin Njinmah also stormed from the start. The winning goal scorer from the Cologne game immediately created the first goal-threatening situation when he beat Zimmermann on the left and crossed inwards. However, Romano Schmid couldn’t control the ball there and poked it past the goal (2nd).

A little later, the ball was in the Darmstadt net: Schmid passed from the right side into the center of the penalty area, where Zimmermann attempted to clear the ball in front of Njinmah, who was ready to shoot, and slipped the ball into his own goal (8th). Werder remained in control of the game and called for a penalty in the 18th minute: But the video images clearly showed that Marvin Ducksch was not touched by Darmstadt goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen when he fell into the penalty area – Bremen’s attacker rightly received a yellow card for his swallow .

… but gets the compensation he deserves

After about half an hour of play, however, the newly promoted team found their way into the game better and promptly equalized after the first half chance through Sebastian Polter, who shot into the arms of Werder keeper Michael Zetterer (32nd): Matthias Bader sprinted into one Pass from Anthony Jung to Felix Agu, the ball was passed wide and across to Justvan, who shot from a good 20 meters and hit the bottom right corner of the goal (33′).

Skarke’s goals disallowed by VAR

After the restart it was the guests who had the first opportunity to score. However, Marvin Mehlem missed almost miserably when he shot well over the goal from a good 15 meters (47′). On the other side, Ducksch also failed from distance due to shoes (49′). Werder now had the game back under control and Njinmah had the chance to make it 2-1, but Schuhen parried the shot strongly (60th).

The Darmstadt defense withstood Bremen’s attacking pressure, but the Hessians hardly had any opportunities to counterattack. And yet Tim Skarke hit the Werder goal, but the supposed 1:2 from Werder’s point of view doesn’t count: according to VAR, the shooter was offside by a foot’s length (78th). In the final second, Skarke was again unlucky. After a back pass and a great jump from Zetterer, he went around the Werder keeper and pushed in – again the goal didn’t count – Skarke had the ball shot by Zetterer onto the hand on his stomach (90th + 5). The Hanseatic League was even lucky that it remained a draw. They simply didn’t create enough compelling scoring chances against the well-defending guests to win their own game.
