Werner Schuler, former player for Universitario and Sport Boys, announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.

Today, Monday, February 19, Werner Schuler surprised everyone with an announcement through his social networks. The player, who wore the shirts of many Peruvian clubs such as Universitario and Sport Boys, decided to retire from football at just 33 years old.

It all started with an announcement from ‘la missileera’, in which it was announced that the central defender “will not be able to continue with us due to personal issues. Werner, this will always be your home! Thank you for everything you contributed in 2009, 2010, 2023 and 2024!” This prompted the Paraguayan-born to publish a statement on Instagram.

Sport Boys announced the departure of Werner Schuler.

“To my colleagues, friends and the general public. With mixed feelings, I am writing to you to communicate my decision to retire from professional football. This choice, although difficult, is motivated by personal considerations. After carefully evaluating it, I believe it is the best for my well-being and that of my family,” you can read in the first paragraph.

Immediately, the ‘Man with the Hat’, as he was known for wearing a head protector following an injury, dedicated words to all those who accompanied him in his sporting career. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have been part of my career in football. “I am very grateful for the experiences lived and the support received.”

Schuler also assured that “he will continue to be part of this beautiful sport in different areas and will explore new opportunities that allow him to contribute to the world of football.” Finally, he placed an order. “I appreciate your understanding and respect for my privacy during this transition.”

His former classmates at Universitario, José Carvallo and Patrick Zubczuk, dedicated emotional messages to him in the comments of his publication. “Gringo, a pleasure to have shared with you, you deserve the best for your quality of person and your professionalism,” wrote the former captain of the ‘U’. “Leñador, a pleasure to have shared so many rallies and dressing rooms together,” said ‘Rusito’.

Salomón Libman, another goalkeeper with whom he shared at UTC, also joined in the greetings. “A great Schuler, a pleasure to share the dressing room with you, 100% professional and as a person, needless to say. I know that you will always do well in whatever you set your mind to.”

Werner Schuler received messages from his teammates after announcing his retirement from football.

His last game in professional football was not the best. He had a strong collision with Gustavo Cazonatti in the head that made him stagger and forced him to leave the field of play in the 54th minute. And as if that were not enough, his team fell 3-1 against Sporting Cristal at the Miguel Grau stadium in Callao.

The defeat against the ‘celestes’ meant his 263rd commitment, according to the different statistical platforms, in which he scored 9 goals and gave 2 assists, despite his position as a central defender. This is how he closed his career as a 16-year-old soccer player.
