When we think of dangerous jobs, we often think of extreme activities that very few people want to do. But according to the International Labor Organization (ILO), the most dangerous jobs are those where there are high levels of requirements or exposure that may jeopardize the safety of workers.
The British newspaper The Sun recently released a list of the most dangerous jobs on the planet, and to no one’s surprise, working as a journalist in conflict zones such as Syria or Ukraine is at the top of the list. Journalists in these areas face constant threats to their lives and safety due to violence and political instability. In 2012, 39 journalists were killed and 21 were kidnapped while covering the conflict in Syria.
The second most dangerous job on the list is being a coal miner in China. The country has a history of accidents and fatalities in its coal mines, with a reported 1,384 deaths in 2012 alone. The mortality rate per 100 million tons of coal mined is alarmingly high, reaching 37 deaths, reflecting the difficult conditions under which Chinese miners work.
Private security in Iraq comes in at number three on the list. Employees of bodyguard companies in Iraq risk their lives to guard embassies, people, and government buildings amid insurgent uprisings and conflicts. Despite the risks, private security is essential in a hostile environment, but adequate security measures and protocols are required to ensure the safety of employees.
Finally, being a police officer in Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous and challenging professions due to the ongoing war between drug cartels and Mexican authorities. More than 60,000 deaths related to violence between cartels and security forces have been recorded in the country, highlighting the constant risks that the country’s security forces and bodies are exposed to.
These dangerous jobs shed light on the risks that many professionals face in their everyday work and the need for strict safety measures to protect them. These individuals risk their lives to carry out their tasks, and it is important to recognize and appreciate the bravery and sacrifice that comes with these occupations.
