French President Emmanuel Macron condemned “with the utmost firmness” the blockades and protests in French universities in condemnation of the war in Gaza. In an interview with La Tribune Dimanche, Macron regretted the students’ actions, stating that they prevent dialogue and productive results.
Macron emphasized that while it is legitimate for young people to debate international news, forcing policies through blockades and preventing others from accessing spaces is not respectful of others or inclusive. He criticized the politicization of these causes, noting that groups like La France Insoumise have used the issue to radicalize new generations.
The Police intervened in several universities in France to evict pro-Palestinian students who were participating in demonstrations. Macron highlighted France’s position on the conflict in the Middle East, calling for an immediate ceasefire and condemning actions that prevent debate.
Despite demonstrations in Paris and other cities, the French government is taking a firm stance to prevent prolonged protests like those seen in the United States. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal’s office stated that they will act firmly when requested by educational institutions to maintain peace and order.
Unlike the United States, where clashes and mass arrests have occurred during university protests, France aims to quickly deactivate protests to avoid further mobilization. The government remains committed to upholding order and preventing prolonged disruptions in educational institutions.
