The mother of the man who murdered the former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe it was linked to the “Unification Church” founded in 1954 by the reverend Sum Myung Moon. This was stated by the leaders of the religious group themselves at a press conference in Tokyo. The murderer, Tetsuya Yamagamimoreover, he had said it to the police from the beginning: he would have killed the politician because he was linked to the sect to which his mother had donated all his possessions, sending the family to the streets.

Although its founder died 10 years ago at the age of 92, the pseudo-Christian organization that has millions of followers in the world (no one knows exactly how many there are) still thrives. Rooted mainly in South Korea where she was born, Japan and the United States, she also has followers in Italy. Grown immensely in the 70s, it reached the peak of its popularity in the 80s and 90s, when it opened numerous offices in America and even joined China. On the other hand, marriage is the fulcrum of their doctrine, expressed in the main text of revended Moon, that “Divine Principle” which dictates the theological foundations of “his” church. His doctrine extols the sanctity of traditional marriage and condemns pre-marital sex, divorce and homosexuality.
And never mind if Moon, in reality, finds the “perfect bride” only at the second marriage: yes, because he too has divorced his first wife, Sun Kil Choi, with whom he had a son. In 1960 she married in fact Hak Ja Han. For the followers, therefore, they are the “real parents”. Together they had 13 children (three died in tragic circumstances: car accident, suicide, drug abuse) considered the “real family”.
The wealth of the Church began in the 1980s, with methods, according to many “brainwashing”. When Moon lands in the United States, he creates a dense network of foundations and companies becoming, it is said, the first South Korean billionaire. A lot of wealth, however, is noticed by the American tax agency and Moon is jailed for 13 months for not declaring $ 162,000 in taxable income. From prison he launches the conservative newspaper Washington Timesborn, according to him, to “fulfill God’s desperate desire to save the world”.
In 1994 the congregation changed its name to Federation of Families for Peace and World Unification, which also includes people of other faiths who accept the blessing of their nuptials from the Moon Spouses, in spectacular mass marriages. Their symbol is a red circle on a yellow background to indicate the heart of God, the source of true love. From the circle emanate 12 rays that symbolize twelve doors, the four main rays, larger than the others, represent the four most important cultural spheres: Christian, Islamic, Hindu and that of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. The circle is inscribed in a square that represents the New Jerusalem and two arrows to indicate the action of universal exchange between God, the human being and creation.
