Who are the favorites to win the presidential elections in Mexico 2024? This is what the polls say

Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate of the ruling Morena party for the presidential elections, maintains a significant lead over her closest opponent from the opposition bloc, Xóchitl Gálvez, as shown by the latest De las Heras survey. The survey, conducted between January 10 and 14, revealed that Sheinbaum captured 66% of the voting intention, while Gálvez obtained 14%. The Citizen Movement candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, appears at a distant 2% of the voting intention, according to the survey.

Some analysts attribute Sheinbaum’s advantage to the strong brand of the ruling party and the high approval levels maintained by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Additionally, a Parametric survey from last December gave Sheinbaum a 53% electoral preference over Gálvez’s 26%, indicating a significant lead for the Morenista candidate.

The El Financiero newspaper also found that Sheinbaum increased her preferences in December, obtaining 52% compared to 30% for her opponent from the opposition bloc. The survey was conducted with 1,200 people over 18 years of age between December 8 and 21. The De las Heras study showed that 78% of those surveyed knew the Morena candidate, 66% knew Gálvez, while 12% were familiar with Álvarez Máynez, the candidate of the Citizen Movement party.

However, some experts believe that between now and the June 2 elections, some things could change, especially with the potential participation of the 35% of voters who did not participate in the previous elections. It remains to be seen if the candidate from the opposition bloc, Gálvez, can make a comeback in the remaining four months of the race.

The electoral process in Mexico is currently in the Inter-campaign stage, with federal campaigns set to begin on March 1 and end on May 29, three days before the presidential elections. This is the time when candidates cannot call citizens to vote or proselytize, although they can have a presence in the media and travel the country to meet with their supporters.
