(CNN) — The non-profit organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) has revealed the names of the seven aid workers who tragically died in an Israeli military attack in Gaza on Monday. The organization praised their “beautiful souls” as international condemnation grows over the events.
Among the seven victims were a dual American-Canadian national, a Palestinian, three Britons, an Australian, and a Pole. The group was part of a returning WCK convoy that was targeted by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attack.
CEO of WCK, Erin Gore, described the fallen workers as “heroes of WCK” and expressed deep sorrow at their loss. The IDF has stated that the incident is under investigation and called the attack a “serious mistake,” asserting that there was no intention to harm aid workers.
The three British victims were identified as John Chapman, 57; James “Jim” Henderson, 33; and James Kirby, 47. All three were part of WCK’s security team. James Kirby, a military veteran, had previously served in the British armed forces in Afghanistan and Bosnia.
Another victim, Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, a Palestinian volunteer and driver for WCK, was the youngest casualty at 25 years old. Colleagues remembered him as full of hope and always willing to help solve any problem.
Jacob Flickinger, 33, held dual American and Canadian citizenship. His death, along with that of his colleagues, prompted strong reactions from US officials, with President Joe Biden expressing outrage and heartbreak over the incident.
Damian Sobol, from Poland, was also among those killed in the attack. He was remembered by the mayor of his hometown as a fantastic individual and a dedicated volunteer for WCK.
Australian citizen Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, a senior manager of WCK’s Asia operations, was also among the victims. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised her humanitarian efforts both in Australia and overseas.
World Central Kitchen, founded by chef José Andrés in 2010, has been a leading provider of food aid in war zones and disaster-stricken regions. The organization has distributed millions of meals in various crisis situations, including the current conflict in Gaza.
Following the tragic incident, WCK announced that it would cease its operations in Gaza. The international community continues to express shock and sorrow over the loss of the heroic aid workers.
