Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced plans to increase nuclear cooperation with Beijing during an official visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Budapest. The two leaders held a joint press conference where Orban stated that Hungary aims to increase the proportion of nuclear energy in the country to between 60 and 70 percent by the beginning of the next decade. The specifics of China’s involvement in Hungary’s nuclear energy projects, including the Paks 2 nuclear power plant renovation near Budapest, were not disclosed.

Orban expressed gratitude for China’s willingness to participate in the development and modernization of the Hungarian economy, highlighting the progress made in bilateral relations over the past two decades. He also emphasized Hungary’s longstanding friendship with China and support for the one-China principle.

In addition to economic cooperation, Orban and Xi shared their views on international affairs, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Orban expressed support for a peaceful resolution through negotiations and emphasized Europe’s stance against war.

Hungary’s participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, as the only EU member state involved in the project, reflects the country’s strategic partnerships with China and other countries in the region.
