Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeals to EU for air defense and weapons to repel Russian attacks

In a passionate plea to European Union leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged for air defense and weapons to defend his country against “terrorist” attacks from Russia. Zelensky specifically requested systems such as Patriot, IRIS-T, SAMP-T, and NASAMS to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from using terrorist methods.

During a videoconference speech at the EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for air defense in Ukraine, citing the recent attacks on Israel from Iran as an example of the level of defense lacking in their region. He called for European leaders to provide more weapons and support to Ukraine to ensure the security of their skies and neighboring countries.

Zelensky also highlighted the importance of strike capabilities in forcing Russian occupiers to leave Ukrainian territory and emphasized the need for artillery shells, vehicles, and drones to support the Ukrainian army on the front lines. He expressed gratitude to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for quickly sending a Patriot missile system to Ukraine but noted the greater need for additional support.

The Ukrainian president warned of the threats to critical infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, from Russian terrorism and called for accelerated implementation of agreements for supplies and financing of relevant projects. He also sought special EU support for restoring electricity generation and distribution after Russian attacks.

In the political sphere, Zelensky urged the EU to fulfill its promises and initiate negotiations on Ukraine’s path to full membership. He called for action from EU leaders to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression and move towards closer integration with the EU.
