When any drug therapy has to be followed, in order for it to be successful, several factors come into play. Naturally, these include the patient’s age, weight, general living conditions, cooperation with the doctor and so on.
In addition to these aspects, however, it is good to underline the importance of the interaction between drugs and foods.
There are, in fact, foods and drinks that can negatively affect the correct functioning and absorption of certain drugs. As, for example, happens with tetracyclines. In fact, those who take this drug should immediately stop consuming cheese and dairy products, as we will see shortly.
Here’s what tetracyclines cure and what the side effects are
Tetracyclines are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics that are effective against certain ailments caused by certain bacterial infections. For example, they are used to treat acne, stomach ulcers, or skin, respiratory and urinary tract infections.
The way to take tetracyclines is by mouth and, like all drugs, they may have side effects. These include the probable appearance of stomach problems, diarrhea, itching of the genitals or rectum. Or, skin reactions, headaches, tiredness, confusion, vomiting or other.
It is not recommended for use in pregnant women and children, diabetic or allergic patients, or those with asthma-related disorders, or with kidney and liver disease.
Anyone taking this drug should immediately stop consuming cheese and dairy products
As also specified by AIFA, some of the drugs included in the tetracyclines group must not be taken concomitantly with other foods.
The therapeutic effects of these drugs could in fact vanish if assimilated with antacids, or supplements / foods rich in iron, calcium and magnesium.
These include cheeses, yogurts, mozzarella, ice creams and so on. For this reason it is preferable to administer it on an empty stomach, away from meals (especially if made up of dairy products), and with plenty of water.
