TREVISO. The Municipality of Treviso takes a stand and takes to the streets to support the Afghan people. About 250 people yesterday afternoon, from Piazza dei Signori, launched a strong message of solidarity to women and children in primis, but also to all the people who are oppressed right now and are experiencing moments of terror and violence.

The initiative organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission – the CISL of Treviso and Belluno also joined the event – saw a mobilization of Treviso people, as well as the participation of young Afghans living in the city. Microphone in hand, to lead the commissioner Alessandro Manera, with the tricolor band representing the mayor, Mario Conte. Beside him the president of the equal opportunities commission, Valeria Zagolin, and the mayor of Quinto di Treviso, Stefania Sartori, for the equal opportunities commission of the Province. Guest Maria Khurasami, a Venetian Afghan from the Orient Experience, who told her story.

Among the audience, several councilors from all political groups, including the League: like the group leader at Palazzo dei Trecento Riccardo Barbisan, Antonio Dotto and Mirco Vinsentin (Zaia-Gentilini list). In Piazza dei Signori a group of young Afghans who fled the country. «We fled in 2016» explains Ghyas, 26, who works in the Officine Del Bello MBM in Mareno di Piave «we arrived on foot. My family tells us what the Taliban are doing to women, men and children. They fear for their life ».

A clear message, that of Piazza dei Signori, to the provincial commissioner Gianangelo Bof, who put a brake on hospitality, inviting the Northern League mayors to wait for developments and stop. «It is not a question of political orientation» said Manera «the Taliban will violate the rights of women, children, homosexuals, they will attack the defenseless, those who do not have the same ideas as them. Anyone who is not a Taliban will be affected by Sharia law and it will be genocide ».

Bof’s diktat? «It is one thing to testify to respect for rights and solidarity with the people. On reception we will see how Europe will behave, which will have to take a united position. It is said that whoever escapes from war is a refugee, more war than this … ».

Some municipalities have already said how many places they have. How will you manage? «The prefect will give us some indications. Moreover, we are talking about theoretical numbers, we do not know how many will be able to escape and leave the country. Our orientation is to wait for indications ». He closes: «I repeat, we are waiting for what the Prefecture will tell us».

This week there will be a summit between the prefect and the mayors, to understand how to behave. “The humanitarian catastrophe that is looming in Afghanistan” says the secretary general of the territorial CISL Massimiliano Paglini “requires a strong and univocal response from the whole international community against religious fanaticism and violations of human rights, in particular towards women and children”.
