Infections in the family and in the nursing home: this is who will need the third dose

The increase in the infection is constant and mainly affects families returning from vacation, the most fragile people also welcomed in retirement homes, the police and health workers.

The coronavirus reappears among the components of the first vaccinated categories, starting last December 27. Observed this phenomenon, the Covid task force, coordinated by the epidemiologist of the University of Udine, Fabio Barbone, posed the problem of the third dose of vaccine, considering it urgent among the most fragile people. The same applies to the vaccination obligation at least for people who work closely with the elderly, sick and frail.

This is where the analysis of weekly monitoring in Friuli Venezia Giulia begins, in the aftermath of Draghi’s press conference during which he confirmed his desire to go towards compulsory vaccination, the third dose and the extension of the Green pass.

“Serious disease rarely develops in patients vaccinated against Sars-CoV2 even if they worry about the levels we see in Israel or in the US also about an increase in the disease of fragile vaccinated people, in which the vaccination was performed several months ago”, he explains Poodle, according to whom, at this stage, it is important to establish the level of immunity even among health workers since some are no longer very young. But not only because, as Barbone always says, “there is a certain number of minor infections among older health workers, that’s why we believe that once fragile people have been made safe, we must also think about health care workers”.

Parallel to the national control room, therefore, the regional Covid task force is also evaluating the opportunity to inject the third dose of vaccine to contain the Sars-CoV2 infection.

The urgency of arriving at the administration of the third dose of the vaccine is justified by the “return of some outbreaks in nursing homes”. The virus has returned to two facilities for the elderly in Trieste and one in the province of Udine.

Even if the effect of the vaccine will act as a barrier to infection, the task force does not want to run the risk of encountering even minimal critical issues compared to those faced in the second phase of the pandemic.

“Even if the clinical impact is modest – points out Barbone -, following the increase in cases the third dose is becoming urgent”. For some days now, the spread of the outbreaks has been becoming more evident. “In July the cases increased among the youngest, between 18 and 30 years of age, who went alone on vacation.

Now, while remaining high, these rates are constant, while the incidence among the over 30s is rising to include the fifties and their children under 10 years of age “.

According to the coordinator of the task force, the contagion is spreading among families also following greater contacts with friends since the beginning of the summer. “In July and August we saw an increase in groups of friends” continues Barbone, not without dwelling on the reverse phenomenon evident in the over seventy-year-olds, where “we hardly see an increase in the circulation of the virus”. The contagion among the sixty-year-olds is more worrying: “in this range – admits Barbine – we are concerned about the unvaccinated”. The unexpected figure recorded in recent weeks is the number of outbreaks that have hit the police.

And analyzing these data, Barbone focuses on the vaccination obligation, hoping that the Government will introduce the obligation at least for certain categories.

There is no vaccination obligation for all the tasks performed by people engaged in the care sector. The stretcher bearers or some operators who work alongside the most fragile people, who are not the Oss, are not subject to the vaccination obligation. Here we need to put order »repeats Barbone, focusing on the need to complete the vaccination campaign for the subjects most at risk.
