[Tempo News Network]The 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits held concurrently due to the impact of the new crown epidemic (Covid-19) opened on the 26th in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. The meeting was held by video . Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, the rotating chairman of the ASEAN, called for continued promotion of the construction of the ASEAN community and efforts to achieve regional economic recovery in the post-epidemic era.
As the rotating ASEAN chairmanship this year, Brunei has set the theme of “common concern, common response, and common prosperity” for ASEAN, and put forward a series of goals and results around the three pillars of the ASEAN political security community, economic community, and social and cultural community. It covers disaster and emergency response, support for multilateralism, post-epidemic recovery, vaccine procurement cooperation, and ASEAN community building.

Chinese President Jokowi participated in the 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits held by video in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei’s capital, at the Palace of Bogor, West Java. At the summit, President Jokowi said that through an inclusive process, ASEAN hopes that Myanmar will restore national social stability as soon as possible and restart the process of domestic democratic transformation. Jokowi once again reminded the consensus reached during the leaders’ meeting in Jakarta on April 24, 2021. As a member of the ASEAN family, he is optimistic that ASEAN will be able to help Myanmar’s military government get rid of the current political crisis.

“Unfortunately, the helping hand extended by this big family has not been responded to by the Myanmar military. The Myanmar military has not yet approved the request of the ASEAN envoy to enter Myanmar before the end of the summit.” The President’s speech at the 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits on the 26th.

Jokowi went on to say that ASEAN’s decision to invite the Burmese military government on a non-political level and provide Myanmar with an opportunity to solve domestic problems first is a difficult decision, but ASEAN must do so.
“On the one hand, we respect the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of ASEAN member states, but on the other hand, we are also obligated to uphold other principles in the ASEAN Charter, such as the principles of democracy, good governance, respect for human rights and constitutionalism,” said Jokowi.

ASEAN will uphold its commitment to the people of Myanmar. This decision will also give ASEAN more room to assist Myanmar in restoring national social stability and restarting the process of domestic democratic transformation as soon as possible. Therefore, ASEAN will still extend a helping hand to Myanmar, including humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar,” Jokowi concluded.
In his speech, ASEAN Secretary-General Dato’ Lim Jock Hoi said that despite the threat of the new crown epidemic, the economies of ASEAN countries have maintained good resilience and it is expected that the regional economy will resume overall growth this year and next. Lin Yuhui said that the economic recovery of ASEAN depends on the continuous advancement of member countries’ new crown vaccination programs. ASEAN will use various methods such as the Anti-epidemic Fund to ensure that member countries have fair and reasonable access to the new crown vaccine supply. (V)
