Berlin (German news agency) – Before the EU interior ministers discuss a major reform of the European asylum system, the Greens in the EU Parliament are pushing for a quick agreement between the ministers without compromising on the right to asylum. “We Greens wish that there is an agreement between the member states so that the European Parliament and the Council can then negotiate the final package,” spokesman for the German Greens, Rasmus Andresen, told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Thursday editions). .

The EU Parliament has already done its homework. “But there can’t be a compromise at any price,” warned Andresen. Apparently, some governments wanted to be driven by right-wing populist symbols, which made it difficult for member states to reach an agreement that wanted to work constructively on a solution. Andresen complained that the compromises to be voted on did not do justice to a modern migration policy and did not change the fundamental problem that the member states at the EU’s external borders would still have to bear the main responsibility for the asylum procedures, but could not handle them. “For us Greens it is clear that there must be no reform of asylum policy against the interests of the EU states with external borders. The universal right to asylum must not be touched either,” said the spokesman for the group of German Greens MPs. An initial registration at the borders is necessary, but months of asylum procedures at the external borders are at the expense of human rights and are ineffective. “Children in particular should not be kept in mass camps for many months.”
