Beware of SMS scams promising package deliveries
If you recently received an SMS message about a package delivery and were prompted to confirm your details, be cautious. Cybercriminals may be attempting to steal your banking information.
Violeta, a victim of this scam, received a message stating “2/2 delivery attempts have been made, please confirm your details or your item will be returned,” along with a link to a fake Correos de México page. After filling out the form with her data, she fell victim to a 20 thousand pesos charge for plane tickets.
Cybersecurity specialist Hiram Camarillo emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant when receiving SMS messages claiming to be from a company. He warns against clicking on unfamiliar links or providing personal data in response to these messages.
Here are some tips to avoid falling victim to these scams:
– When in doubt about a delivery notification, contact the courier company directly
– Always check your email for shipment messages
– Avoid opening suspicious links or responding with personal or banking information
– Verify the address of the pages you click on to ensure they are official domains
– Use an internet search to look up phone numbers or URLs from suspicious messages
– Report suspicious numbers and links
– Install antivirus software on all your devices
Remember to stay cautious and alert when dealing with unexpected delivery notifications.
