I test preliminari

The Ocean Disclosure Initiative, defined as the evaluation grid, is divided into three different phases, the first being that of preliminary tests, conducted on operational realities in three industrial sectors (fishing and aquaculture, agriculture and livestock, fashion), to then involve the entire productive fabric.

This is followed by the publication of the first ocean-based business assessment and the development of sectoral protocols.

“McKinsey’s pro bono project for One Ocean Foundation has developed over the past three years. The proposal that is presented starts from the analysis of four pillars: the Decade of the Sea and the UN 2030 Agenda, the Ocean Health Index and the 2010 EU Directive, with the study of 17 initiatives dedicated to the theme of the ecosystem marino – comments Leonardo Totaro, Chairman of McKinsey Mediterraneo -. We have realized that the privileged target of these initiatives are usually governments and investors, but not companies. Hence the need for a tool that would help them better understand their impact on the marine ecosystem and make them more responsible, at the same time helping them to better orient themselves to improve their ESG rating ».

The involvement of banks and insurance companies

The methodology implemented aims to promote greater transparency on the issue of sea quality to fill the existing gap, in terms of common perception, regulation and improvement initiatives, with the issue of air quality.

«Companies pay increasing attention to their emissions, the same must be done for the impact on the sea – adds Totaro -. To encourage the adoption of this model by companies, we also aim to involve financial institutions as banks and insurance companies have a great interest in having customers who are attentive to environmental sustainability. If we work well, within a couple of years we could create a real index to measure and manage the footprint of the productive realities on the oceans ».
