Changes to Airline Carry-On Suitcase Size: New European Measures and Possible Impact on Passenger Costs

Low-cost airlines may soon be changing their policies on carrying hand luggage for cabin passengers, following proposed changes by the European Parliament. However, despite the approval of the request in October, the companies have rejected the idea of making carry-on bags free.

The rise in fuel prices in 2023 has resulted in more expensive plane tickets in Spain and the rest of Europe. As a result, citizens are looking for alternatives to make their flights cheaper and avoid having to pay extra for luggage.

While hand luggage is typically included in the price of the ticket according to the Air Navigation Law, companies are not specified on measurements or weight, allowing them to set the limits for their clients.

The International Air Transport Association recommends that hand luggage should not exceed 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm. The European Parliament has approved measures to allow flying with hand luggage without an additional cost in the ticket, but the request is still subject to approval by the European Council. It remains to be seen if and when these new measures will come into effect.
