According to Wang Minghua, deputy director of the Rural Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, the main reason for the increase in cotton sown area in Xinjiang is that the state continues to implement the target cotton price subsidy policy for the region. In addition to the increase in cotton prices since last year, farmers are more enthusiastic about growing cotton. Other cotton areas were affected by factors such as planting benefits and planting structure adjustments. The sown area of cotton was 522.1 thousand hectares (7.831 million mu), a decrease of 144.9 thousand hectares (2.174 million mu) from the previous year, a decrease of 21.7%, and the 13th consecutive year since 2009. However, the later meteorological conditions improved and farmers strengthened field management, and Xinjiang cotton yield fell steadily and slightly. The weather conditions in other cotton areas are generally more suitable.
