Citizenship income, over 12 billion spent. In February it went to more than a million families

MILANO – The fight against poverty will be strengthened with the next measures of the government: one billion on citizenship income and three months more in emergency income, the one with less stringent requirements ranging from 400 to 800 euros. At the gates, however, there is a profound review of the DRC, the flag measure of the first Conte government in the M5s quota, which the new minister Andrea Orlando has already put in place, complete with a technical-scientific committee to solve the problems. Ranging from the equivalence scale that penalizes large families to subsidy thresholds that are too low for the North (where poverty exploded with the pandemic) and too high for the South (where work is effectively discouraged).

Pending these interventions, the numbers of INPS give an idea of the dimension of the phenomenon of social and economic hardship. In February, according to the update of the National Insurance Institute Observatory, over one million families received citizenship income in February for 2.3 million people involved and an average of 564 euros per household. The decrease in the number of households compared to the previous month (1.2 million in January) is due to the updating of the single substitute declaration (DSU), which is essential in order to continue with the disbursement of the benefit, which may have been submitted late or having caused the forfeiture of the benefit.

From April 2019 to February 2021, 12.28 billion euros were spent on income and citizenship pension, the Observatory shows. In total, more than 23 million months have been paid since the introduction of the measure. The month in which the most was spent was January 2021 with over 691 million disbursed.
