Apple today released a new support document that warns iPhone users that the camera on their device may be damaged by exposure to certain vibration frequencies, such as those produced by high-power motorcycle engines.
IPhone cameras with optical image stabilization (OIS) or closed-loop autofocus (AF) are susceptible to this damage because they use gyroscopes or magnetic sensors to help compensate for movement and vibration when taking photos or videos. Apple stated in the document: “The OIS and closed-loop autofocus system in the iPhone are designed for durability. However, just like many consumer electronic products that include OIS and other systems, they are directly exposed to high-amplitude vibrations in certain frequency ranges for a long time. This may reduce the performance of these systems and cause the image quality of photos and videos to decrease. It is recommended to avoid exposing your iPhone to long-term high-amplitude vibration.”
Due to this risk, Apple recommends that users do not directly fix the iPhone on the chassis or handlebars of this type of motorcycle, because the vibration directly transmitted may be very strong. Apple even recommends that users install the device on low-power devices such as mopeds and electric scooters, at least using shock-absorbing brackets to reduce any chance of damage.
It is unclear whether there is a specific reason for Apple’s release of this document at this point in time, but there have been some reports of damage in this situation in forums and other over the years, including on mountain bikes.
Apple has previously warned that OIS and closed-loop autofocus systems are also subject to magnetic interference. When used with certain iPhone accessories, it will reduce camera performance, although magnetic problems are often temporary, and only need to remove the accessories. Can be remedied, and vibration will more easily lead to permanent damage to the system.
