Dominican Republic’s Potential Hydrocarbon Deposits: A Game Changer in Energy Exploration

The Dominican Oil Refinery (Refidomsa) has presented a report indicating the possible existence of hydrocarbon deposits, specifically oil and natural gas, in four basins in the country. The study, conducted in collaboration with the Pedro Henríquez Ureña University (UNPHU) and the University of Santander, Colombia, marks a significant milestone in the efforts to determine the oil and gas potential of the Dominican territory. According to the president of the Board of Directors of Refidomsa, Leonardo Aguilera, the results of the study will revolutionize the strategy for locating important oil and natural gas deposits, based on geological and geophysical factors. The information contained in the report will serve as a guide to attract potential national and foreign investors who are interested in entering the industry. The study is seen as a starting point for larger projections aimed at the quantification of probable reserves and exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources in the Azua, San Juan, Enriquillo, and Cibao basins. The report has been endorsed by prestigious laboratories and research centers, providing information of high strategic value for the Dominican State. Aguilera has invited potential investors to make use of this tool, which contains geolocated information on areas of high potential for oil and natural gas exploration. This marks the first such study of its size in the Dominican Republic and is expected to have significant implications for the country’s energy sector.
