by admin

The first World Coalition of Farmers Markets is launched to respond to the demand for healthy and local food from consumers and the need to guarantee food supplies all over the world where food poverty is growing by 15% due to the health emergency.

This was announced by Coldiretti on the occasion of the “glocal” market promoted by Campagna Amica for the inaugural start of the UN pre-summit, with the presence of the deputy secretary Amina J. Mohammed, who estimates the people who they lacked access to healthy diets in 2020, up by nearly 320 million in one year.

One in three people in food poverty

It is, underlines Coldiretti, about one in three people in the world where almost 80% of what is consumed is the result of family farming, which is the most vulnerable in the south of the planet. Direct sales in farmers’ markets supports the incomes of farmers who are among the poorest categories on the planet and guarantees consumers the possibility of buying healthy food at the right price by reducing waste and defending biodiversity in a virtuous ethical circuit with a fair distribution of value from field to table. Without forgetting, Coldiretti points out, the positive impact on the climate with the consumption of zero-kilometer products that do not have to travel great distances with polluting vehicles.

The spread of farmers’ markets

Globally, one in five countries (20%) can already count on direct sales systems that can find a point of reference for growth in the new “World Farmers Market Coalition”. Among the promoters of the World Coalition of Farmers Markets, together with Italy there are the USA, Norway, Australia, Denmark, Japan, Canada, Chile, Ghana, South Africa, Georgia, England and others have already declared their interest in joining.

Supported by the FAO, the coalition is a tool for spreading farmers’ markets around the world with particular regard to developing countries, accompanying governments on the one hand towards the adoption of a specific regulatory framework and on the other, continues Coldiretti, assisting local farmers’ associations in the development of networks such as Campagna Amica in Italy, the Farmers Market Coalition in the United States or Canada, with technical-legal, communication and training support for managers and farmers.
